Pronunciation Lesson 3
The Letter I
How do you pronounce it?
The Letter I isn’t quite as variable in English as some of the other vowels are, but it does have a few variations:
- With
- Fir
- Tire
- Dice
As you’ve already learned with the other Spanish vowels, the letter I always makes the same sound. It makes an “ee” sound, like in the words bead and wheel.
Practice Words
Here are some words with good I sounds to practice. Listen to the recording, and say the words just like you hear them. Practice this at least twice.
- Límite
- Filipino
- Principio
- Crisis
- Difícil
- Dividir
- Imprimir
- Insistir
Practice Sentences
Now it’s time to practice some sentences that emphasize the I sound. You will hear it twice at the beginning; listen carefully before you say it yourself. After the second time, then say it yourself, just the way you heard it. You will hear it once more, and say it once more.
El príncipe rígido impide la crisis difícil.
(The rigid prince impedes the difficult crisis.)
Insistí que es imposible dividir mi colibrí.
(I insisted that it’s impossible to divide my hummingbird.)
