Bible Lesson 31

Will this world always be broken?

No! God will bring complete peace and wholeness!

Isaiah prophesied, hundreds of years before Jesus came, that a child would be born to the family of Jesse (who was the father of King David). This child would be wise, just and righteous, and above all, would fear the Lord.

Jesus came from the family of King David, showing these qualities and much more. But what about the rest of the prophesy? We still see violence and brokenness in all of life, both among humans and between animals. So did this prophesy not come true?

Rather than saying it has come true, let us say it is coming true. Jesus bore the penalty of sin so that one day all nature could be renewed to peace and perfection. He also tore down the “dividing walls of hostility” that separated one people group from another, so that within the family of God, there is “neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male or female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus”!

As God’s reign and rule extend, this prophesy from Isaiah is being fulfilled. One day, when “the earth is filled with the knowledge of God” then we will see this idyllic peace come fully to pass!

Isaiah 11

And there will spring up a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a stem from its roots will bear fruit. And the Spirit of the Lord will rest upon him, a Spirit of wisdom and intelligence, a Spirit of counsel and power, a Spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord.

He will delight in the fear of the Lord, and he will not judge by what his eyes see, nor condemn by what his ears hear; but he will judge the poor with righteousness, and will judge with fairness the afflicted of the earth; He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he will kill the unrighteous.

Righteousness will be the sash of his loins, and faithfulness the belt of his waist.

The wolf will dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the baby goat; the calf, the lion cub and the yearling will walk together, and a child will lead them. The cow and the bear will graze, their young will lie down together, and the lion, like the ox, will eat straw.

The nursing child will play next to the cobra’s cave, and the weaned child will put its hand over the den of the viper. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, because the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord like the waters cover the seas.
