Pronunciation Lesson 13

The Letter X

Normal circumstances:

The letter X generally makes the same sound in Spanish as it does in English. It most commonly occurs after the letter E, and it actually sounds quite a bit like the word “aches!”

Listen and repeat:

  • Exigir
  • Examen
  • Exagerar
  • Extra
  • Exclamar
  • Existir
  • Taxi

Unusual cases

There are only a few words in Spanish where the X makes the same sound as the Spanish J.

Listen and repeat:

  • México
  • Mexicano
  • Texas
  • Oaxaca
  • Quixote
