Pronunciation Lesson 22

U and I together

What happens when U and I are together?

When the two weak vowels come together, they blend into each other, and the second one is pronounced more clearly. Usually the U comes before the I, making a “we” sound.

Listen and repeat:

  • Cuidar
  • Buitre
  • Huir
  • Contribuir
  • Ruidoso

There aren’t many IU combinations…

…but they do occur occasionally. This combination makes a “you” sound.

Listen and repeat:

  • Ciudad
  • Viuda
  • Miura
  • Diurético
  • Diurno
