Bible Lesson 14

What did Jesus do?

He died to rescue his people from sin and death!

When this passage from Colossians talks about our debt, the Greek words there refer to a written record of what is owed, written by the hand of the person who owes it. That’s what our sins are: a record of our unfaithfulness and treachery, written in our own handwriting.

But thanks be to God, he took that record and nailed it to the cross, cancelling the debt that we owed!

Romanos 5  (NTV)

Romans 5

When we were totally unable to save ourselves, Christ came at the precise moment and died for us sinners.

God showed the great love that he has for us when he sent Christ to die for us when we were still sinners. Then, since he declared us righteous in the eyes of God by the blood of Christ, with all assurance he will save us from the condemnation of God. So, since our friendship with God was reestablished by the death of his Son when we were still his enemies, with all assurance we will be saved by the life of his Son. Therefore now we can rejoice because of our new and marvelous relationship with God thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ making us friends of God.

Colossians 2

You were all dead in your sins. Nevertheless, God gave us life in union with Christ, by forgiving us all our sins and cancelling the debt that we had against us through the requirements of the law. He cancelled that debt that was against us, nailing it to the cross.
