Bible Lesson 3

Who Is God?

He is three persons in one God.

Though the Bible clearly presents that God is one, we are also clearly shown that God is three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  How can this be? People have used a variety of images to try to clarify how God can be three in one. One egg has shell, yolk and white. One clover has three leaves. And so on.

Are these images helpful? Perhaps, but only to get us started. If our understanding of God as Three-and-one only gets us picturing eggs and clovers, it will not inspire us to love and worship. As Michael Reeves says, “How could the eggishness of God ever be more than a weird curiosity? I am never going to fall down in awe or find my heart drawn to a God so ridiculous.”

The solution, then, is not to simplify God into quaint comparisons, but rather to allow ourselves to be lost in wonder at the fact that God is wholly beyond our understanding. And as we seek God through scripture and prayer, let us get to know each of his persons, and their relationships to each other, and their oneness, and let us respond with love and admiration!

Dios es tres personas en un Dios

Juan 14

God is three persons in one God

John 14

“I tell you this while I am with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name, will teach you and remind you of all that I told you.

“I give you peace. It is my own peace that I give you, but I don’t give it like that of the world. Do not worry nor have fear. You heard me say that I am going and that I will return to you all. If in truth you loved me, you would have rejoiced that I go to the Father, since He is more important than I.”

II Corinthians 13:14

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
