¡Hola a todos! Vamos a hablar con Penny para esta entrevista. Pues, ¿cómo estás, Penny?

Hola, Elva. Estoy bien, gracias. ¿Y tú?

Estoy muy bien también, gracias. Pues, el tema de hoy es la educación. ¿Cuál era tu materia favorita en la escuela?

Mi materia favorita era biología. Me gustaba mucho porque aprendía muchísimas cosas sobre cómo funciona el cuerpo humano, sobre los animales, sobre la naturaleza en general y el funcionamiento general del mundo y era algo por lo que tenía mucha curiosidad.

¿Cuál era la materia que te gustaba menos?

¡Uf! La que menos me gustaba era matemáticas.

Y, ¿por qué?

Pues, porque me parecía muy complicada y para la vida diaria, me parecía útil en algunas cosas, pero en otras no.

Ah, eso tiene sentido. Bueno, en la escuela, ¿preferías estudiar del libro de texto o de tus apuntes?

Pues, depende. Si el libro de texto era interesante, me gustaba seguirlo. Pero si no, pues prefería tomar mis propios apuntes, me entendía mejor.

Y, ¿alguna vez suspendiste una asignatura?

Sí, claro. Pocas veces, pero alguna.

Pues, en general, ¿recibiste buenas notas en la escuela secundaria?

Sí. En general, sí. A veces procrastinaba algo y me costaba un poco hacer los deberes, por pereza, o porque había cosas más divertidas que hacer. Pero en general, era buena estudiante.

Bueno, ¿y en la universidad?

Pues, en la universidad también era buena estudiante. Tenía más disciplina que tienes de pequeño y tenía mejor organización, organizaba mejor mis horarios, aunque me pasaba un poco lo mismo que unas asignaturas me motivaban más que otras o unos profesores más que otros.

Sí, el profesor a veces tiene un impacto en la motivación, ¿no?

Sí, sí. Totalmente de acuerdo.

Entonces, ¿tienes alguna licenciatura?

Sí. Tengo la licenciatura en filología inglesa.

Vale. Y en la universidad, ¿recibiste alguna beca para la matrícula universitaria?

Sí. Recibí una el primer año.

Y, ¿fue difícil elegir esta especialización?

Pues, no fue muy difícil porque me gustan mucho los idiomas y el inglés, pues es el más común, el más hablado. Entonces me parecía muy práctico escogerlo porque aunque me gustan mucho otros idiomas quizás más raros como el chino o el italiano, que para los españoles es bastante fácil porque es muy parecido. Pero el inglés me parecía más práctico.

Ah, entonces finalmente, ¿tienes algún consejo para los estudiantes que no saben en qué especializarse?

Sí. Pues, que hablen con gente que ya trabaja de eso, y si pueden, incluso que trabajen en ello. No sé: un verano, como prácticas etcétera, para poder ver la realidad de ese trabajo, de esa carrera que están estudiando y a ver si les gustará.

Hello everyone! We are going to talk with Penny for this interview. Well, how are you, Penny?

Hello, Elva. I am well, thank you. And you?

I am doing well too, thanks. Well, today’s topic is education. What was your favorite subject in school?

My favorite subject in school was biology. I liked it a lot because I learned many things about how the human body works, about animals and nature in general, and the general functioning of the world and it was something for which I had a lot of curiosity.

What was the subject you like the least?

Oof! The one I liked the least was math.

Why?

Well, it seemed very complicated to me and for daily life, some things seemed useful but others not.

Ah, that makes sense. Well, in school, did you prefer to study from the textbook or from your own notes?

Well, it depends. If the textbook was interesting, I liked to follow along. But if not, I preferred to take my own notes; I understood them better.

And, have you ever failed a subject?

Yes, of course. Rarely, but sometimes.

In general, did you receive good grades in high school?

Yes. In general, yes. Sometimes I procrastinated and it was hard for me to do my homework, because of laziness, or because there were other more fun things to do. But in general, I was a good student.

That’s good. And in college?

Well, in college I was also a good student. I had more discipline than you have as a child and I had better organization. I organized my schedules better, although the same thing happened to me a little bit that some subjects motivated me more than others and some professors more than others.

Yes, the teacher sometimes has an impact on motivation, right?

Yes. Totally agreed.

So do you have a bachelor’s degree?

Yes. I have a bachelor’s in English philology.

Ok. In university, did you receive a scholarship for college tuition?

Yes. I received one my first year.

And, was it difficult to choose that major?

Well it was not very difficult because I really like languages and English, well it’s the most common, the most spoken. So it seemed very practical to choose it because although I like other more unique languages like Chinese or Italian, which is very easy for Spaniards because it’s very similar. But English seemed the most practical.

Ah, well finally, do you have some advice for students who do not know what to major in?

Yes. Well, that they talk with people that already work in that, and if they can, to even work in it. I don’t know: one summer, like an internship etc., to be able to see the reality of that job, that career that they are studying and to see if they would like it.
