Part 1: Dictation

Play the recordings and write down the sentences that you hear. You can play the recording multiple times. Once you have finished, check your answers by opening the box below the recording.

As you listen to the following recording, listen for the answers to the following questions. Don’t worry about the parts you don’t understand. Instead, focus on what you do understand, and try to answer the questions in Spanish.

  3. Close the Spanish script, and listen once more with no script. Do your best to distinguish the words and phrases you are hearing. Focus on understanding the main ideas, not every detail.

¡Hola a todos! Hablo con Madeline. Y primero, ¿puedes contarnos un poco sobre tus estudios?

Sí. Yo… bueno, la prepa la hice en Wisconsin. Estuve allí por, pues, cuatro años asistiendo a la prepa allí. Y después hice mi bachiller en Tennessee. Allí hice mi bachiller en ciencia de salud y también estudié español. Y después vine acá a California para hacer mi máster en salud pública.

Y, ¿la universidad que asistes ahora es muy grande o pequeña?

Es como… mediana. No es súper grande pero tampoco muy chiquita. Hay diferentes departamentos entonces cada departamento tiene sus alumnos. Y mi departamento de salud pública es un poco chica, pero hay otros departamentos que tienen más chicos.

Sí, me encanta. Yo escucho la música 24/7.

Oh sí, me encanta. Yo tengo una lista de sinfonías y diferentes orquestas alrededor del mundo.

Me gustan mucho, pero Bach y Beethoven son unos de los mejores.

Hello everyone! I’m talking with Madeline. First, can you tell us a little bit about your studies?

Yes. Well, I did high school in Wisconsin. I was there for four years attending a high school there. And then I did my bachelor’s in Tennessee. I did my BA there in health science and I also studied Spanish. And then I came here to California to do my master’s degree in public health.

And is the university you attend now big or small?

It’s kind of medium-sized. It is not super big but neither is it very small. There are different departments, so every department has its own students. And my department of public health is a little small but there are other departments that have more people.

Ok then. And now we are going to talk about entertainment. So, do you like listening to music?

Yes, I love it. I listen to music 24/7.

And, do you have a favorite singer?

I have many. I like—I always like listening to a group called Reik, they sing in Spanish. And I really like a lot of Latin music like Ban Bunny, Becky G, Karol G, all of them.

And do you also like to listen to an orchestra?

Oh yes, I love it. I have a list of symphonies and different orchestras around the world.

And do you have a favorite composer?

I like a lot, but Bach and Beetoven are some of the best.

Yes, I agree. And do you play an instrument?

Yes. I played a lot when I was young, but I still play a little. My mom, when I was little, I had to play the piano and do piano classes, so I play the piano. When I was little, I also played the violin and the flute, also a little guitar, and my mom gave me, last year she gave me a ukulele. So that is what I have now.

And have you played in a band or orchestra?

When I was little, yes. I had the flute and I did play in a band. Now, no.

Ah, ok then. And do you know anyone who plays the drums?

Yes. My brother plays the drums.

Very well then. Now, let’s talk about drama. So, do you have a favorite actor?

Oof. I like many actors, but I don’t know if I have a favorite—Sandra Bullock, I love her. There are others but I don’t remember their names.

And, if that person stars in a movie, do you always watch it?

Yes.

OK. And have you participated in a drama?

No. I have not participated in a drama.
