When Jesus received the news, he withdrew himself alone in a boat to a solitary place. The crowds found out and followed him on foot from the villages. When Jesus disembarked and saw so many people, he had compassion on them and healed those who were sick.
At evening his disciples came to him and told him, “This is a solitary place and it’s already getting late. Dismiss the people, so that they’ll go to the villages and buy something to eat.”
“They don’t have to go,” answered Jesus, “You give them yourselves something to eat.”
They objected, “We don’t have here more than five loaves and two fish.”
“Bring me them here,” Jesus told them.
And he ordered the people to sit on the grass. He took the five loaves and two fish and, looking to heaven, he blessed them. Then he divided the loaves and gave them to his disciples, who distributed them to the people. Everyone ate until being satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve baskets full of pieces that were left over. Those that ate were some 5,000 men, without counting the women and children.
Right away Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and he sent them ahead to the other side while he dismissed the crowd. After dismissing the crowd, he went up the mountain to pray alone. At nightfall, he was there alone, and the boat already was pretty far from the land, shaken by the waves, because the wind was against it.
In the early morning, Jesus approached them walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified.
“It’s a ghost!” they shouted with fear.
But Jesus said to them right away, “Be calm! I am. Do not have fear.”
“Lord, if it is you,” responded Peter, “command me to come to you on the water.”
“Come.” said Jesus.
Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water in the direction of Jesus. But upon feeling the strong wind, he became afraid and started to sink. Then he shouted, “Lord, save me!”
Right away Jesus stretched out his hand to him, and holding on to him, reprimanded him, “Man of little faith! Why did you doubt?”
When they got in the boat, the wind calmed itself. And those who were in the boat worshiped him saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
