Part 1: Dictation

Play the recordings and write down the sentences that you hear. You can play the recording multiple times. Once you have finished, check your answers by opening the box below the recording.

As you listen to the following recording, listen for the answers to the following questions. Don’t worry about the parts you don’t understand. Instead, focus on what you do understand, and try to answer the questions in Spanish.

  3. Close the Spanish script, and listen once more with no script. Do your best to distinguish the words and phrases you are hearing. Focus on understanding the main ideas, not every detail.

Pues, ¡hola a todos! Hoy aquí estoy con la señora Garibay. Y, pues primero, ¿cómo estás?

Estoy muy bien.

Ah, qué bueno. Y, ¿de dónde eres?

Ya nací en una ciudad pequeña llamada Blythe, está en las orillas de California cerca de Arizona.

Y, ¿dónde vives ahora?

Well, hello everyone! Today I’m here with Mrs. Garibay. And, well first, how are you?

I am very good.

Ah, that’s good. And, where are you from?

I was born in a city called Blythe, it is close to the border of California close to Arizona.

And, where do you live now?

Now I live in Moreno Valley, which is more centered around more people, it is wider, definitely bigger than my little town.

Ah, nice. And, when you were a girl, did you leave cookies for Santa for Christmas?

When I was a girl, I believed in Santa for what the kids at school said. But in my house, we never had the tradition because we would stay awake until midnight. I already saw my gifts, I already knew, only some had the name of Santa Claus and I said, oh ok, he arrived early at my house. But my kids, yes. My kids do leave cookies.

Ok then. And, did you have a lot of friends when you were in high school?

When I was in high school, I did have many friends because as it was a small town, they were the same kids in kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade. They were the same with which I graduated from high school.

Ok. And, is your room always arranged or do you need to tidy it frequently?

Yes. I constantly need to organize things, of course. I have a 2-year-old girl who does mischief and she leaves many toys everywhere. So I am always trying to return things to their place.

Ah, that makes sense. And do you know the owner of a company?

I have a cousin that is the owner of a cell phone company. My husband is also the owner of a cargo truck company.

And, is your cousin a polite or rude person?

My cousin is a very polite person. He says that it is always important to get along well with all the clients because that way they keep coming back. He wins people with his happy personality.

And, what type of oil do you prefer to cook with?

My preferred oil for cooking is olive oil. It has little bit of flavor but I like it.

Yes, and finally, do you know someone with a doctorate degree?

I know professors and distant friends with a doctorate degree. And for one moment, they had inspired me to go and try to get my doctorate, but I did my second master’s degree and after the second master’s, I did not want to return to try and get the doctorate yet. Who knows in the future, maybe I will change my mind, but I stayed with the two masters.
