Passing along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, Jesus saw Simon and his brother Andrew who were casting their net into the lake, since they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said to them, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At that moment they left their nets and followed him.
A little farther they saw James and his brother John, sons of Zebedee, who were in their boat mending the nets. Right away he called them, and they, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with his laborers, left with Jesus.
The entered into Capernaum, and as soon as the Sabbath arrived, Jesus went to the synagogue and began to teach. The people were amazed at his teaching, because he imparted it as one who has authority and not as their teachers of the law. Suddenly, in the synagogue, a man who was possessed by an evil spirit cried:
“”Why do you interfere with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy One of God!”
“Quiet yourself!” responded Jesus, “Leave that man!”
Then the evil spirit shook the man violently and left from him, giving a shriek. All were so scared that they asked each other, “Who is this? A new teaching, he does it with authority! He gives orders even to evil spirits, and they obey him.” As a result, his fame extended rapidly throughout the region of Galilee.
As soon as they left the synagogue, Jesus went with James and John to the house of Simon and Andrew. Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with fever, and right away they told it to Jesus. He approached her, took her by the hand and helped her to rise. Then the fever left her and she got up to serve them.
At nightfall, as the sun was setting, the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed, so that the whole population was congregating at the door. Jesus healed many who were suffering from diverse ailments. Also he cast out many demons, but he did not let them speak because they knew who he was.
Very early in the morning, when it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went to a lonely place, where he began to pray. Simon and his companions went out to seek him.
Finally they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.”
Jesus responded, “Let’s go from here to other nearby villages where also I can preach; for this I have come.”
So he went throughout Galilee, preaching in the synagogues and expelling demons.
