Bible Lesson 32

El Fin de la Historia – the End of the Story

These two scenes help to draw a close to this series on the life of Jesus. The first scene is after Jesus’ resurrection, when he rises into heaven with all his disciples watching. Then angels come and promise that he will return in the same way.

The second scene is from the vision that God gave to the apostle John, when Jesus has returned and all evil has been forever abolished. Then Jesus dwells again with his people in a perfect world, forever!

And this place isn’t a semi-spiritual existence where we wear robes, play harps and float on clouds (which is totally not in the Bible). Rather, it’s this world, made new and perfect, never to be damaged again!

It’s a physical place where we will live, work, eat, talk, see, hear and love! Where the endless wonders of creation can be enjoyed and delighted in, and there will be no more pain, sickness or sadness!

And the centerpiece and source of joy will be Jesus, living with his people once more. May I see you there some day!

After suffering death, he showed himself giving them many convincing proofs that he was alive. For forty days he appeared to them and he spoke to them about the Kingdom of God. One time, as he ate with them, he ordered them:

“Don’t go far from Jerusalem, but await the promise of the Father, of which I have told you: John baptized with water, but within a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

Then those who had been reunited with him asked him:

“Lord, is now when you are going to reestablish the kingdom of Israel?”

“It is not for you to know the hour or the moment determined by the authority of the Father himself” Jesus answered them. “But when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will receive power and will be my witnesses just as much in Jerusalem as in all Judea and Samaria, and unto the ends of the earth.”

Having said this, while they watched him, he was taken to the heights until a cloud hid him from their sight. They remained looking fixedly at the sky as he departed. Suddenly, two men dressed in white approached them, who said to them:

“Men of Galilee, what are you doing here looking at the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from among you to heaven, will come again in the same way that you have seen him leave.”

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, because the first earth had ceased to exist, the same as the sea. I saw also the holy city, the new Jerusalem, that came down from the sky, coming from God, prepared like a bride beautifully dressed for her promised one. I heard a powerful voice that came from the throne and said: “Here, among human beings, is the dwelling of God! He will encamp in the middle of them, and they will be his people; God himself will be with them and will be their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Now there will not be death, nor mourning, nor lamentation nor pain, because the first things have ceased to exist.”

He who was seated on the throne said: “I make new all things!” And he added: “Write, for these words are true and worthy of trust.”

Also he said to me: “Now all is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the one who thirsts I will give to drink freely from the fountain of the water of life. He who comes out victorious will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son.”
