Part 1: Dictation

Play the recordings and write down the sentences that you hear. You can play the recording multiple times. Once you have finished, check your answers by opening the box below the recording.

  • La historia es acerca de una cabra y un cerdo.

Play the recording from part 1 again and repeat what you hear out loud. You can do this with the Dictation Key open or closed. You will need to pause the recording to have time to say each phrase before the next one starts.

As you listen to the following recording, listen for the answers to the following questions. Don’t worry about the parts you don’t understand. Instead, focus on what you do understand, and try to answer the questions in Spanish.

Once you have done your best to answer the questions, please use the button to check your responses.

  2. Close the English script, and listen again to the recording from part 3, following along with the Spanish version.
  3. Close the Spanish script, and listen once more with no script. Do your best to distinguish the words and phrases you are hearing. Focus on understanding the main ideas, not every detail.

Hola, Joel, ¿cómo estás? ¡Mucho gusto!

Igualmente. Bueno, Carlos, ¿de dónde eres?

Soy del país de Perú, de una ciudad que se llama Iquitos, que está en la Amazonia peruana.

Muy bien, y ¿es una ciudad grande o pequeña?

Es una ciudad pequeña, que está rodeada por muchos ríos.

Muy bien. Y su familia tiene una finca allá. ¿Tu madre y tu hermano ahora están viviendo allá en la finca?

Sí, y mi hermana se va a dormir allá a veces. Y ella se encarga de velar, de cuidar que todo esté en orden, chequeando todo.

Muy bien. Y tu familia allá cultiva muchas plantas para comer, ¿verdad?

Sí, tenemos plantas para… que cultivamos para comer, como árboles de limón, tenemos tomates, tenemos pepino, tenemos árboles de mango, de aguacates, tenemos también guayabas.

Y ¿ustedes comen todo, o venden mucho?

Al principio solamente comíamos, pero como ahora allá hay mucha producción, porque hemos sembrado bastantes, y estamos ya para venderlo.

Muy bien. Y ¿qué animales crían en la finca?

Por el momento solo criamos gallinas, patos.

Muy bien, y ¿son para comer o para los huevos?

Solamente para los huevos.

Y ¿no tienen cerdos ni cabras?

No, no tenemos cabras ni cerdos.

Muy bien. Y ¿nada para montar? ¿Ningún animal?

No, no tenemos ningún animal para montar.

Pero los vecinos allá, ¿tienen caballos o burros para montar?

Sí, los vecinos que están a mi costado tienen caballos. Algunos tienen vacas.

Allí, ¿les molestan los insectos? ¿Hay muchos insectos allá, como cucarachas, o pulgas, moscas?

Sí, tenemos muchos insectos. Especialmente ellos aparecen en las noches. Los mosquitos, las cucarachas, pues como todo campo, siempre vienen. Tenemos moscas, y pulgas, por los perros que tenemos allí.

Muy bien, y ¿hay un granero?

Tenemos un granero.

Bueno, y ¿hay muchas cercas en la granja?

Sí, toda la finca está cerrada con cerca.

Same here. Well, Carlos, where are you from?

I am from the country of Peru, from a city that is called Iquitos, which is in the Peruvian Amazon.

It is a small city, which is surrounded by many rivers.

Very good. And your family has a farm there. Your mother and your brother are now living there on the farm?

Yes, and my sister goes there to sleep sometimes. And she is in charge of watching out for, making sure everything is in order, checking everything.

Very good. And your family there cultivates many plants to eat, right?

Yes, we have plants for… that we cultivate to eat, like lemon trees, we have tomatoes, we have cucumber, we have mango trees, avocado, we also have guavas.

And do you guys eat everything, or do you sell a lot?

At the start we only used to eat, but now there is a lot of production, because we have planted a lot, and we are now about to sell it.

Very good. And what animals do you have on the farm?

For the moment we only raise hens, ducks.

Only for eggs.

No, we don’t have goats or pigs.
