Part 1: Dictation

Play the recordings and write down the sentences that you hear. You can play the recording multiple times. Once you have finished, check your answers by opening the box below the recording.

As you listen to the following recording, listen for the answers to the following questions. Don’t worry about the parts you don’t understand. Instead, focus on what you do understand, and try to answer the questions in Spanish.

Hoy vamos a hablar con Madeline sobre los deportes. Entonces, ¿cuál es tu deporte favorito?

Bueno, es que tengo un deporte favorito en que me gusta jugar, y el que me gusta jugar es “American football.” El que me gusta ver, o sea ir a ver el juego es fútbol, “soccer.”

¿Tienes un equipo favorito?

De fútbol americano, no. No tengo.

Y, ¿te gusta mirar el fútbol en el estadio, o prefieres mirarlo en la tele?

No, en el estadio es mejor.

¿Qué equipo es necesario para jugar? Como una pelota o…

Sí se requiere una pelota. La de fútbol americano pues, es la pelota de fútbol americano. Cuando juego fútbol americano, no es el original. Yo a veces juego lo que es el “flag football”, entonces se necesitan las banderitas para jugar.

Y, ¿qué pasa cuando hay un empate?

Bueno, depende de quién está a cargo con los equipos, porque a veces lo dejan en empate, o si no, pues seguimos jugando.

Y, ¿cuáles son algunas posiciones importantes en ese deporte?

Bueno, si estamos hablando de “soccer” o fútbol, pues necesitamos los delanteros y pues, el que va a estar protegiendo el gol. Y los que están en el medio y los “strikers” también.

Y, ¿qué tal el fútbol americano?

Bueno, no me sé las posiciones súper bien. Pero sí sé que están el “hiker,” el “halfback”… No he jugado todas las posiciones pero hay diferentes dependiendo que si son “offense” o “defense”.

Y, en ambos deportes, ¿hay un árbitro?

Sí.

Today we are going to talk with Madeline about sports. So, what is your favorite sport?

Well, the thing is, I have a favorite sport that I like to play, and the one that I like to play is football. The one I like to watch, or rather to go and see the game is soccer.

Do you have a favorite team?

In football, no. I don’t have one.

Do you like to watch soccer in the stadium or do you prefer to watch it on TV?

No, in the stadium is better.

What equipment is necessary to play? Like a ball or…

It does require a ball. The one for American football, well, it’s the ball for American football. When I play football, it’s not the original. I sometimes play flag football, so the flags are needed to play.

And, what happens when there is a tie?

Well, it depends on who is in charge with the teams, because sometimes they leave it as a tie, or if not, then we continue playing.

And, what are some important positions in this sport?

Well, if we are talking about soccer (or “fútbol”), well we need the forwards and, well, the one who is going to be protecting the goal. And those that are in the middle and the strikers as well.

And, what about football?

Well, I don’t know the positions very well. But I do know that there’s the hiker, the halfback… I have not played all the positions but there are different ones depending on if they are offense or defense.

And in both sports, is there a referee?

Yes.
