Part 1: Dictation

Play the recordings and write down the sentences that you hear. You can play the recording multiple times. Once you have finished, check your answers by opening the box below the recording.

Play the recording from part 1 again and repeat what you hear out loud. You can do this with the Dictation Key open or closed. You will need to pause the recording to have time to say each phrase before the next one starts.

Part 3: Listening for Information

As you listen to the following recording, listen for the answers to the following questions. Don’t worry about the parts you don’t understand. Instead, focus on what you do understand, and try to answer the questions in Spanish.

Once you have done your best to answer the questions, please use the button to check your responses.

Part 4: Follow along

Use the arrow buttons to open the Spanish and English scripts. Use the following steps:

  1. Read through the script with English and Spanish side by side, so that you understand what you heard.
  2. Close the English script, and listen again to the recording from part 3, following along with the Spanish version.
  3. Close the Spanish script, and listen once more with no script. Do your best to distinguish the words and phrases you are hearing. Focus on understanding the main ideas, not every detail.

Sí, muy cerca.

Thanks. To begin, is there a library close to your house?

Yes, very close.

Good, and do you visit this library sometimes?

Sometimes, yes, but when my son was littler, we frequented there several times a week.

So, you like books?

Yes, I like them a lot.

And do you like long books, or short books?

It depends. If I am reading to small kids, I like short books for them. But for me, to be honest with you, what I love are recipe books for cooking.

That makes sense. What about movies? Do you prefer to see movies at home? Or at the theater?

Well, it depends. I like to go to he theater if they are movies that I like, if they are based in real life.

Good, what about music? Do you listen to music often?

A lot, yes.

And how do you listen to music?

How? Well, here in my house, sometimes on the radio, sometimes on the iPod. I like Motown music, I also like Latino music, I like praises, to God. I like different types, different genres of music.

So, the last question. To write, in general, do you use a pencil or a pen more?

A pen.
