Part 1: Dictation

Play the recordings and write down the sentences that you hear. You can play the recording multiple times. Once you have finished, check your answers by opening the box below the recording.

Play the recording from part 1 again and repeat what you hear out loud. You can do this with the Dictation Key open or closed. You will need to pause the recording to have time to say each phrase before the next one starts.

Part 3: Listening for Information

As you listen to the following recording, listen for the answers to the following questions. Don’t worry about the parts you don’t understand. Instead, focus on what you do understand, and try to answer the questions in Spanish.

Once you have done your best to answer the questions, please use the button to check your responses.

  1. Read through the script with English and Spanish side by side, so that you understand what you heard.
  2. Close the English script, and listen again to the recording from part 3, following along with the Spanish version.
  3. Close the Spanish script, and listen once more with no script. Do your best to distinguish the words and phrases you are hearing. Focus on understanding the main ideas, not every detail.

Hoy hablo sobre la ropa y algunas descripciones con la Señora Pinedo. Entonces primero, ¿usas un pañuelo de papel o de algodón cuando estás enferma?

De papel.

Y ¿piensas que la ropa de moda hoy es bonita o no?

Bueno, la ropa ha cambiado mucho, la moda. Sí hay unas cosas que me gustan, pero honestamente, no me gustan como los pantalones todos rompidos. Porque cuando yo era niña, nosotros nunca usábamos ropa que estaba rompida o ya tan vieja porque uno siempre pensaba que era uno muy pobre. Sí, sí. O una fiesta, o algo así. O un cumpleaños. Algo así.

Y ¿conoces a alguien con pelo rizado?

Sí. Una de mis mejores amigas tiene pelo rizado.

Bueno. ¿Qué tal con pelo liso?

Sí. También tengo amigas con pelo liso. Los dos estilos son muy bonitos. La amiga que tiene el pelo rizado, me encanta porque parece que le pusieron, le dieron un permanente pero no, es natural. Y se le ve bien bonito.

Bueno. Para seguir con la ropa otra vez, ¿llevas un traje cuando vas al trabajo?

Ahorita no estoy trabajando. Uso ropa muy casual.

Today I talk about clothing and some descriptions with Mrs. Pinedo. So first, do you use a handkerchief of paper or of cotton when you are sick?

Of paper.

And, what about clothing? Do you think today ‘s fashionable clothing is pretty or not?

Well, clothing has changed a lot, fashion. There are some things that I like but honestly, I do not like the pants all ripped up. Because when I was a girl, we never used clothing that was ripped or old because one always thought that you were very poor. So we always used clothing that looked good and that was pretty.

So do you prefer to use shoes with low heels, or high, or without heels?

Well, it depends. For example, if I am at home, or I go to, for example, the supermarket, sometimes I use sandals or a low heel. But if I go out to dine with my husband, or go to a party, I like high heels.

So high heeled shoes are for more formal occasions, right?

Yes. Or a party, or something like that. Or a birthday. Something like that.

And, do you know someone with curly hair?

Yes. One of my best friends has curly hair.

Good. ¿What about with straight hair?

Yes. I also have friends with straight hair. Both styles are pretty. The friend that has the curly hair, I like it because it looks like they put, they gave her a perm, but no, it is natural. And it looks very pretty on her.

Well. To continue with clothing again, do you wear a suit when you go to work?

Right now I am not working. I use casual clothing.
