As you listen to the following recording, listen for the answers to the following questions. Don’t worry about the parts you don’t understand. Instead, focus on what you do understand, and try to answer the questions in Spanish.

¡Hola a todos! Vamos a hablar con Penny sobre cosas relacionadas con las profesiones. Y, ¿puedes decirnos otra vez cuál es tu profesión?

Sí, claro. Soy profesora de inglés.

Y, en tu opinión, ¿es fácil ganarse la vida con tu profesión?

Pues, yo creo que sí. Tiene bastantes salidas laborales ya que el inglés es un idioma muy importante tanto a nivel profesional como personal.

Ah, si. Eso tiene sentido. Y, pues, ¿tienes un gerente?

Sí.

Y, ¿cómo es tu gerente?

Pues, es una mujer y es una profesional muy buena y una gran persona. Tiene muy buenas cualidades también: empatía, comunicativa, es creativa por lo que es un placer trabajar con ella día a día.

Eso es bueno. Y, ahora, ¿conoces a algún programador?

Pues, sí. La mayoría de mis amigos son programadores o del mundo de la informática, que está ahora muy en auge.

Y, ¿a algún científico?

Pues, sí, también. Mi mejor amiga, de hecho, es investigadora junta en una universidad británica.

Ah, qué interesante. Y, ¿tienes un contador personal para ayudarte con las finanzas?

La verdad es que sí. Tengo un contable personal porque como no me dan mucho las finanzas, no se me dan muy bien, y tengo poco tiempo, pues necesito alguien que me ayude con estos temas.

Vale. Y, también, cuando necesitas una reparación en casa, ¿tratas de arreglarla o llamas a una empresa?

Pues allí, depende. Si es algo sencillo, como cambiar bombillas o pintar, me gusta hacerlo yo mismo. Pero si es algo más difícil o quizá algo peligroso, prefiero que lo hagan profesionales que sepan del tema.

Vale. Sí, estoy de acuerdo. Pues, ¿qué piensas acerca del trabajo de los bomberos?

Pues, creo que es un trabajo muy importante porque salvan vidas y también nos dan seguridad.

Y, ¿del trabajo de juez?

Creo que también es importante y también a la vez, difícil porque es nada fácil tomar las decisiones que ellos toman, que también afectan a mucha gente.

Sí, creo que es muy importante también. Y, ¿qué crees del rol de un ama de casa? ¿Es importante también?

Pues, sí. También creo que es muy importante porque es un trabajo muy duro y sin vacaciones. También trabajan el fin de semana, festivos y también sin remuneración económica. Y al mismo tiempo, es un elemento que equilibra la familia.

Ah, es importante para las familias, sí. Y finalmente, en tu opinión, ¿qué debe hacer uno para tener éxito?

Pues, primero, deben encontrar algo lo que sea bueno y que al mismo tiempo el mundo necesita. Y luego, tener mucha pasión por lo que hace y querer aprender constantemente. Con ello creo que se puede llegar fácilmente al éxito.

Ah, entonces, es como dijiste, ¿un equilibrio entre algo que te gusta hacer y algo que el mundo necesita?

Exacto. Porque si haces algo que te gusta mucho pero realmente nadie lo necesita, pues, no te van a pagar por ello y vas a tener esa parte económica mal con lo cual va a afectar otras partes. Si haces, sin embargo, algo que te gusta, pero además se necesita y te pueden contratar y pagar por ello, pues vas a tener ese equilibrio personal de satisfacción y económico y en lo profesional también poder crecer. Si, además, lo haces con pasión, pues ir a trabajar será un placer en vez de un agobio porque se te pasará el tiempo volando, y si además quieres aprender constantemente, siempre estarás activo y adaptándote a lo que venga porque hoy en día, el mundo cambia muy rápidamente y siempre hay que estar aprendiendo – no sólo estudiar una carrera y ya no estudiar nada más, sino siempre actualizarse.

Hello everyone! Today we are going to talk to Penny about things related to professions. Can you tell us again what your profession is?

Yes, of course. I’m an English professor.

And, in your opinion, is it easy to earn a living with your profession?

Well, I think so. There are many job opportunities, given that English is a very important language at both the professional and personal levels.

Ah, yes. That makes sense. And, well, do you have a manager?

Yes.

What is your manager like?

Well, she is a woman, and a very good professional, and a great person. She has many good qualities too: empathy, communicative, she is creative so it’s a pleasure to work with her every day.

That’s good. And, now, do you know a programmer?

Well, yes. The majority of my friends are programmers or in the world of information technology, which is blooming now.

And, a scientist?

Well, yes. My best friend, in fact, is an adjunct investigator with a British university.

Ah, how interesting. Do you have a personal accountant to help you with finances?

The truth is, yes. I have a personal accountant since I don’t get finances very well, I’m not very good at it, and I have little time, so I need someone that can help me with those areas.

Well, I think it is a very important job because they save lives and they also give us safety.

And, about the job of judge?

I think it is also important and at the same time, difficult, because it is not easy to make the decisions that they make, which also affect many people.

Yes, I think it is very important as well. And, what do you think of the role of a housewife? Is it important as well?

Well, yes. I also think that it is very important because it is a very hard job without vacations. They also work on weekends, holidays, and also without economic payment. And at the same time, it’s an element that balances the family.

Ah, it is important for families, yes. And finally, in your opinion, what should one do to have success?

Well, first, they should find something that they are good at, and at the same time that the world needs. And then, to have a lot of passion for what you do and to want to constantly learn. With that I think it is possible to reach success easily.

Ah, so, like you said, a balance between something that you like to do and something that the world needs?

Exactly. Because if you do something that you like but in reality, no one needs it, well, they won’t pay you for it and your personal economics will be bad, which will affect other areas. If you do, however, something that you like but is also needed and they can hire and pay you for it, then you will have that personal balance of satisfaction and economics and you can also grow in the profession. If, in addition, you do it with passion, then going to work will be a pleasure instead of an exhaustion because the time will go by flying, and if you want to constantly learn, you will always be active and adapting yourself to what comes because nowadays, the world changes rapidly and you have to be learning – not just study your career and never study anything again, but always keeping up to date.
