Part 1: Dictation

Play the recordings and write down the sentences that you hear. You can play the recording multiple times. Once you have finished, check your answers by opening the box below the recording.

Part 3: Listening for Information

As you listen to the following recording, listen for the answers to the following questions. Don’t worry about the parts you don’t understand. Instead, focus on what you do understand, and try to answer the questions in Spanish.

  3. Close the Spanish script, and listen once more with no script. Do your best to distinguish the words and phrases you are hearing. Focus on understanding the main ideas, not every detail.

¡Hola profesora Short! ¿Cómo estás?

¡Hola Elva! Estoy muy bien, gracias. ¿Y tú cómo estás?

Estoy muy bien también. Y, ¿puedes compartir un poco sobre tu profesión?

Pues, enseño español, obvio. Y, yo empecé a enseñar en 2010. Y yo no iba a ser profesora, este nunca era mi plan. Pero Dios siempre tiene un plan diferente. Yo fui a la universidad para hacer la maestría en español y parte del programa de esa universidad fue la oportunidad de enseñar y me enamoré de la enseñanza.

Qué bueno. Y, ahora, ¿asistes a alguna iglesia?

Sí. Asisto a una iglesia que se llama Valley View.

Y, ¿en qué día de la semana se reúne?

Los domingos y también en estos momentos, en línea también cuando quieras.

Y, ¿Hay ancianos o diáconos en tu iglesia?

Sí, tenemos ancianos.

Y, ¿cuántos?

La verdad es que no sé cuántos ancianos tenemos. No es una iglesia súper grande – creo que hay como tres o cuatro ancianos.

Me gusta la forma en que aplica la Biblia en una manera más íntima – en una manera para que cada persona aplique el mensaje, como a ti mismo.

Ah, qué bueno. Y, ¿ustedes bautizan a los niños en tu iglesia, o solo a los adultos?

Solo a los adultos porque pensamos que es importante que la persona que está bautizando tome la decisión de hacerlo, de recibirlo.

Hay una mezcla con canciones modernas y también himnos. A mí me gustan los dos.

Sí. Creo que sí porque creo que la caridad es parte del corazón de Dios, de cuidar a otras personas.

Hi Professor Short! How are you?

Hi Elva! I’m doing well, thank you. And how are you?

I’m doing good as well. And can you share a little about your profession?

Well, I teach Spanish. And I started teaching in 2010. I was not going to be a professor, that was never my plan. But God always has a different plan. I went to university to do my masters in Spanish and part of the program of that university was the opportunity to teach and I fell in love with teaching.

That’s great. And now, do you attend a church?

Yes. I attend a church called Valley View.

And, on what day of the week does it meet?

On Sundays, and also in these times, online whenever you want.

And do you have elders or deacons at your church?

Yes, we have elders.

How many?

The truth is that I do not know how many elders we have. It is not a super big church – I think there are like three or four elders.

Good. And do you like the preacher of your church?

Yes, he is a part… well, he is the reason that we go to that church. We were looking for a church and we chose this church because of the preacher. We listened to services online looking for a church.

And why do you like this preacher?

I like the way in which he applies the Bible in a more intimate way – in a way so that each person applies the message to themselves.

Ah, that’s good. Do you baptize infants at your church or only adults?

Only adults because we think that it is important that the person who he is baptizing makes the decision to do it, to receive it.

Okay. And in your church, what types of songs are used during worship?

There is a mix of modern songs and hymns. I like both.

Ah, good. So, older songs and also modern songs.

Exactly, yes.

And, finally, do you think that charity is an important characteristic?

Yes. I think it is because I think that charity is part of the heart of God to care for other people.
