Bible Lesson 5
Los Reyes Magos – The Magi Kings
In Latin America, it is actually on January 6 that Hispanics traditionally give gifts, rather than on Christmas. That is because this day is the celebration of the arrival of the wise men, who brought the gifts to Jesus.
The day is also celebrated by eating a Rosca de Reyes. The Rosca is a wreath-shaped sweet bread, decorated with powdered sugar and candied fruit. There is also a figurine of a baby inside. The shape and decorations all have symbolic meanings, and the baby inside represents Joseph hiding baby Jesus from Herod. The cutting of the bread symbolizes the danger Jesus was in. Whoever gets the piece with the baby is supposed to supply the tamales at the family Candlemas celebration on February 2!
